Few trophies command a room like a good bull. Outlaw Taxidermy builds elk shoulder mounts, pedestals and European mounts with quality forms, careful cape work and lifelike facial detail — the same specialist-level craftsmanship we are known for on birds, brought to your big game. Serving hunters across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.
Elk Mounts & the Space They Need
An elk is a large-format mount, and the single most common regret we hear is underestimating the space. Use this as a rough guide before you decide:
| Mount style | Space it needs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| European mount | Fits almost any wall | Any budget; multiple bulls; a clean, modern look |
| Shoulder mount | A tall, open wall | The classic trophy-bull display |
| Pedestal mount | Floor space + clearance | A standout centerpiece, viewable all around |
| Life-size | A large, dedicated area | The ultimate statement piece |
What We Build
Shoulder Mounts
The classic bull mount, posed to fit your wall — straight, semi-sneak or turned. The most popular way to display a trophy elk.
Pedestal Mounts
A dramatic floor or wall pedestal that lets a true bull stand on his own as a centerpiece.
European Mounts
Clean, whitened skull-and-antler mounts that show off a big rack — timeless, affordable, space-friendly.
Antler Work & Repair
Antler panels, broken-tine repair, and restoration of old or faded mounts. We bring tired trophies back to life.
Caping a Bull in the Field
- Cut well back. Ring the body a good distance behind the front shoulders — elk shrink less forgiving than you think.
- Never open the throat. Keep the brisket and throat intact for a shoulder mount.
- Protect the cape from the antlers. Do not drag the bull by the rack across his own hide.
- Cool it immediately. Heavy hides hold heat and spoil fast; get it cool or frozen quickly.
- Call if unsure. When in doubt, get the whole caped head to us and we will handle it.
Why Hunters Trust Outlaw
We treat every mount like it is going on our own wall — quality forms, careful cape work, lifelike eyes and honest timelines. That is why Mountain West hunters bring us their best bulls and send their friends. We stand behind our craftsmanship and will not hand a mount back until it is right. Pricing runs from an affordable European mount up to a full pedestal; reach out with your bull and we will quote you straight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cape a bull elk?
Elk hides are big and heavy. Cut in a full ring well behind the front shoulders, never up the throat, and keep as much cape as you can. Cool it fast or freeze it, and do not drag the bull by the antlers across the cape.
How much wall or floor space does an elk mount need?
More than most hunters expect. A shoulder mount needs a tall, open wall; a pedestal needs floor space and clearance; a European mount fits almost anywhere. We will help you match the mount to your room.
How long does an elk mount take?
Roughly 6 to 12 months, since the cape must be tanned and the mount dried. We keep you updated throughout.
Do you do life-size elk mounts?
Yes, but they are a major piece needing real space. Most hunters go shoulder or pedestal; we will talk through what fits.
